Protein ice cream is pretty controversial as far as desserts go. On one side, you've got everyone who loves getting to down an entire pint for only 300 calories. On the other, you've got everyone who can't get past the aftertaste and lack of creaminess and would rather just eat actual ice cream, damnit. (See: Why I'm Breaking Up with "Healthy" Ice Cream)
But one thing we can all agree on? Protein ice cream is pretty pricey, with popular brands going for upwards of $6 a pint. Leave it to Trader Joe's, land of affordable almond butter and wine, to offer a high-protein ice cream for 1/3 of that price. That's right, you can find a brand called Swell in the freezer aisle at Trader Joe's for $1.99 a pint, which is even cheaper than some of TJ's normal ice cream pints. (FYI, these are the healthiest ice cream varieties, according to a nutritionist.)
Trader Joe's started selling the brand last year when it was still referred to as ProYo. (The company rebranded in May in hopes of broadening its bro-heavy customer base.) The ice creams' macros are on par with popular protein options and exceptionally high in protein. Each has 120 calories, 0.5–2 grams of fat, 18–20 grams of carbs, and 10 grams of protein per serving. For reference, Halo Top has 70–90 calories, 2–3.5 grams of fat, 13–18 grams of carbs, and 5 grams of protein per serving.
There are a few areas where Swell might fall short depending on your preferences. There are 10 flavors—vanilla bean, mint chip, Dutch chocolate, coconut, dark chocolate toffee, peanut butter chocolate chip, salted caramel crunch, chocolate chip cookie batter, and cookies and cream—so you won't find an exotic option like Halo Top's pancakes and waffles flavor or Enlightened's "Movie Night." Also, if you're looking for a vegan or dairy-free option, you'll have to go elsewhere. (Looking for the most delicious option? We did a taste test of the best healthy ice creams.)
Swell is sold in other grocery stores besides Trader Joe's, so even if you don't live near a TJ's, you can use Swell's store locator to see if it's available near you. (That said, not every store offers the same low price.) And if you find out you're living in a Swell desert, there's still hope. Aldi has its own $2.99 protein ice cream pints. So if you've been a fan of macro-friendly ice cream but not its price, might as well look into your options.
